film in class 2/10/09

Some of the things on the film I was conscious of such as the on campus shootings and the black communities efforts to be allowed in school. However I didn't know that there was such a push to get African-American studies in schools. I thought it interesting that they had to work so hard to get the curriculum emplaced in schools. This class keeps throwing more and more information at me that isn't in the text books of my previous classes.

  1. Ah, ha, Tim! That is the whole point! What else might be left out of your previous formal education that might also totally blow your mind? Hmmmmm......knowing this history, and the three emphases that Karenga identified (social action, a greater connection between campuses and local communities, and African American studies as a corrective perspective in relation to other intellectual practices), we can better appreciate Hill Collins' argument for black feminist studies as having the achievement of social justice at its heart.
